Fighting fuel poverty through housing renovation

ReHABITA

Energy poverty is a challenge that affects many vulnerable households across Europe. In order to address this issue, the LIFE ReHABITA project was launched on 1 September 2023 to tackle energy poverty by renovating vulnerable households in five European municipalities: Lorca (Spain), Ploiești (Romania), Plovdiv (Bulgaria), Saldus (Latvia) and Gospić (Croatia).

However, LIFE ReHABITA is more than an energy renovation project. It is an initiative that seeks to transform communities and improve the quality of life of the most vulnerable families. Through the renovation of homes, investment in energy efficiency and adaptation to climate change, this project will make a difference in the fight against energy poverty and it will ensure a more sustainable future for all.

What does the project consist of?

Despite the many advantages that a thorough renovation could bring to a vulnerable family, the need for renovation is often perceived as a problem rather than an opportunity. LIFE ReHABITA wants to change this perception. The project will establish ReHABITA Offices in the most disadvantaged neighbourhoods of the partner municipalities. These offices will be a place where citizens can obtain comprehensive information about this housing renovation services.

Trained municipal technicians will guide citizens through the entire renovation process at the ReHABITA Offices, from planning to implementation. The aim is that dwellings will be renovated by an energy point of view in order to achieve greater thermal comfort and save on electricity bills.

What will be the impact of the project?

The LIFE ReHABITA project has an ambitious goal: to renovate 500 homes and benefit 1,250 citizens through these renovations, for which an investment of more than 6.5 million euros will be mobilized. The renovation of these dwellings will have a significant impact on the quality of life of vulnerable citizens, with a reduction of 37% of the energy consumption per residence.

Project calendar

The project will run for 4 years, from 1 September 2023 to 31 August 2027.

Project partners

The project consortium consists of 5 European municipalities, each accompanied by a technical partner to support them in the implementation of the project. These technical assistants will bring their experience working with vulnerable citizens and planning local strategies.
